Tournaments are coming!

Hi friends! In the past few weeks, we’ve been to 2 tournaments, Chaos Invitational at University of Maryland Baltimore County and Temple Open at Temple University. Some newbies already had fun fencing in the real competitions, and returning members also found themselves being improved! In the next several weeks, they can continue enjoying themselves in the upcoming tournaments:

Saturday 12/5/15- Trico Meet; Haverford College, Haverford, PA

Sunday 12/6/15- NIWFA Christmas Invitational; Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ

This year is the third year for us to hold BWCFC Fall Meet on campus. Our fencers are well prepared to welcome our peers from other schools, so definitely come watch us fencing and support us!

Practices and Fall Frolic Fall 2015

Welcome (back) to Bryn Mawr and hope you have fun in shopping week!

For returning members, practices will start on Thursday 9/3 in the Graduate School of Social Work Gym as usual. This year practice times have been changed to 8:30-10pm on Tuesdays, 3-5:30pm on Thursdays, 4:15-7:30pm on Fridays, and 2:30-5pm on Sundays.

For anyone interested in joining, come to Fall Frolic on Saturday 9/5 from 5-7pm, stop by our table, make some new friends and sign up! On Tuesday 9/15 from 8:30-9:30pm in Pem East TV room we will hold the first meeting for anyone willing to join.

News for Spring 2015 Semester

We have a number of tournaments this semester, near and far- come check us out if you’re in the area! We’ll also soon be announcing more details on our annual alum tournament, which we plan to hold on the afternoon of Saturday May 2nd, the day before May Day.

Saturday 2/21- BWCFC Spring Meet; George Washington University, Washington, D.C  — Cancelled due to weather conditions!

Saturday 2/28- NIWFA Championships; Lafayette College, Easton, PA

Saturday 4/11- USACFC Championships; Bensalem High School, Bensalem, PA

Saturday 4/19- BWCFC Championships; Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA

 

Our first years (and all our other members) are eagerly awaiting the start of Hell Week on February 18th! For the second year in a row, we will be providing them with a fun, fencing-themed schedule of activities. Tasks from last year include: fencing with spoons, challenging Coach to a duel, and chasing geese using proper footwork.

Also happening this semester is our traditional sports bra sale! The sports bras are black with gold lettering that says “Bryn Mawr Supports Women”, and come in sizes S-XXL. Contact Maggie Alvarez (mralvarez@brynmawr.edu) for more information on purchasing one (or more)!

Now that the semester is in full swing, we have a number of upcoming tournaments that our fencers will be attending! Some of our experienced fencers will be attending Temple Open on Saturday, November 1st, in their McGonigle Hall. This year Bryn Mawr is hosting the Baltimore-Washington Collegiate Fencing Conference on Sunday, November 16th. If you’re in the area, please come watch and cheer us on!

Welcome back! Practices and Fall Frolic Fall 2014

The new school year has begun, and with that comes the start of fencing! Practice for returning members will start on Tuesday 9/9. Practices are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 7, with team dinner at Haffner afterwards as usual.

For members interested in joining, stop by our table at Fall Frolic, talk to us about fencing, and sign up! Fall Frolic is held on Friday 9/12 from 5-7pm on Erdman Green (in between Erdman and Pem Arch), and all the clubs and student organizations will be there for you to check out! We will also be holding an interest meeting for anyone thinking of joining; time and place TBA.

Practices for new members will begin on Tuesday 9/16. We’ll meet outside Canaday and leave at 4:15 to walk to the Graduate School gym (meeting Brecon people around 4:20).

Fun End-of-Year Events

To celebrate the end of classes and the end of the year, the club organized and hosted a dance party, “Fencing Prom,” for ourselves and the Drexel fencing club. We all dressed up, danced, and had a great time!

Every year at Bryn Mawr College’s May Day celebration, the fencing team writes and performs a parody of the traditional tale of St. George and the Dragon. Click here to watch this year’s play, performed by the team on May 4th. Thanks to everyone who came to see us!

At the end of the year, the fencing team (and coach!) always gets together in the kitchen on campus to make and eat food together, to celebrate the end of the year!

Alum tournament 5/3

Update: We will be holding our informal tournament for alums and current members on Saturday 5/3, the day before May Day, at 1pm at the Graduate School gym!  Click HERE  for the Facebook event with more details and updated information.

Please RSVP either on Facebook or via email by this Friday to give us an idea of who’s going!

This will be the second year we’ll be doing this, so we’re hoping to make it a true tradition! Equipment will all be provided. We’re hoping to get lunch before or dinner after, and have some time for everyone to hang out. If you will be in the area, please consider joining us for a fun time!

Happy New Year! + Very Belated 12/7 Scrimmage Post

Happy New Year! I realized that we never posted anything about our scrimmage back on December 7th! We had a scrimmage on Haverford’s campus with Haverford, Swarthmore, Drexel, and ourselves. Drexel was in the middle of exams, so only 4 of their members were able to make it, so we helped them fill in the gaps, essentially combining Drexel and Bryn Mawr into one team for the day! Everyone had a great time and it was a great opportunity to get some more experience in!
